From Texas to Spain via Renewable Energies

The Rise Fund, a global investment fund, focuses on social and environmental impact investments. Established in 2016 by the American giant TPG, based in Fort Worth, Texas, it is among the world's largest private equity firms. The fund invests in businesses and projects aiming to generate positive social and environmental impacts while seeking financial returns. Its portfolio includes renewable energies, clean technologies, healthcare, education, housing, and financial services.

Recently, through its renewable energy company, Matrix Renewables, The Rise Fund has embarked on an ambitious plan in Spain to delve into the green hydrogen business. Matrix is finalizing a deal with the Spanish group Rolwind Renovables to create Hyren, a new platform dedicated to developing green hydrogen projects in Spain.

The green hydrogen business involves the production, storage, transportation, and use of hydrogen as an energy source. Distinguished from regular hydrogen (obtained from natural gas, oil, coal, or water), green hydrogen is produced from renewable sources like solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass energy, emitting no greenhouse gases or pollutants.

Matrix Renewables chose Spain for various reasons: its potential for renewable energy production, strategic geographical position for hydrogen distribution in Europe, commitment to a low-carbon economy transition, ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction goals, and a stable, predictable regulatory framework. These factors make Spain an attractive location for renewable energy investment, particularly in green hydrogen.

Matrix aims to reach 4,000 megawatts within about ten years, potentially becoming Spain's largest independent hydrogen project, surpassing those of major Spanish oil companies (Repsol, Cepsa) and electric utilities (Iberdrola, Endesa).

This initiative by The Rise Fund and Matrix Renewables in Spain promises significant economic and competitive potential, contributing to greenhouse gas emission reduction and a shift towards a more sustainable, environmentally friendly energy model.
